New Activities
NEW ACTIVITIES FOR SUMMER AND FALL OF 2009
New Apprentice Cooks
Men and women - learn to cook our traditional event meals.
Come help us peel, slice, dice, mix and cook meals for Tag der Donauschwaben Picnic in Lake Villa, Kirchweih, German Day, Rosenball, Schlachtfest and New Years Eve. This class is free to all who come and help. We had lots of fun at our first class for our Mother 's Day event and the food was delicious. Goulash is now our specialty. We cannot wait until we master "Schweinebraten" "Schnitzel" and our famous potato salad. All our apprentices received certificates, had our photos taken and earned the respect of our teachers. This class always takes place on the date of our events. See club calendar for dates and times. The next cooking session for this program will be on Satuday, August 1 in Lake Villa for our Tag der Donauschwaben event. After that our next scheduled class will be in September 29th for our Kirchweih.
“Donau Cooking Club” for men and women!
We invite you to become a member of our newest group starting up at the club. It is for anyone who enjoys cooking our traditional German recipes and for those that want to learn to make these recipes. Come join us, as we start a new tradition. If you love to cook and want to share your skills and recipes with us, please contact me and I will be happy to put you on the schedule. Right now, we are looking at Wednesday evenings – once a month. We also plan to meet on Saturday mornings as the schedule allows. If you are interested in participating, as a teacher or student, please let me know. The cost for this class will depend on the menu and how many people we are cooking with. You can sign up to cook for just yourself, or make an entire meal for your family and take it home with you. Class schedule and prices will be posted later. Call or email if you are interested in joining this group Class size is limited. Look for our schedule in a future “Nachrichten” and/or on our website www.donauchicago.com
Dancing at the Donau
Dance Club for couples and/or singles - find a partner among our singles, invite your friends !
Once a month we will get together to learn different kinds of dances from professionals who will come to our club and teach us. We already have request from some of you to learn "Latin" dances. There are also some requests for line dances. Prices will vary, depending on the classes. For line dancing, we will have a DJ who teaches the class, and then we all practice and have lots of fun. So put on your dancing shoes and join us for some real fun. If you are interested in joining this group - let me know what kinds of dances you would like to learn - those will then be the first ones that we put on the schedule. These will probably also be on Wednesday nights at the club. Once we get good at the new dances that we have learned, we will host a special dance night where we will have a dinner and you can invite all your friends to come and vote for you. The couple with the most votes will win a special prize. We will have several categories. Prices, type of dance class and times will be posted according to your interests, at a later date. Depending on class size, prices may decrease for group discount availability. Call or email if you are interested in joining this group.
Summer Indoor Rummage/Garage Sale
1. Rent table space for a nominal fee of $25 and sell your own items. We supply the tables/chair. You keep the profits of what you sell.
2. Bring your items to sell and the club receives all the profits. Your donation will be listed in our program book and our monthly newsletter.
Date and time still to be determined, depending on interest and volunteers
Crafts and Hobby night
We already have a group of men coming on Friday nights to play cards, so let us see if the ladies are interested in making crafts or sharing hobby skills with others. Give us some of your suggestions and we can make this a regular Friday night happening! What are you interested in? Maybe we can find someone who can teach us that particular art or skill. Call or email if you are interested in making this a reality. These can also be held during the day on dates available for those that do not want to drive in the evening.
Saturday clean up days on our property.
1. Help us to make our environment a safer place to be. During the school year, help us during the German School hours to clean the property of debris. Lend us your landscaping skills and talents to make our property more attractive. Let’s plant more bushes, flowers and bring new life to the outside of our building. Let’s make some picnic tables, benches and gathering places where we can have picnics and outdoor games. Lunch is included.
2. Once a year, we have a clean up day where we wash down walls, windows (inside and outside) and their treatments, clean the chairs and carpeting, dance floor, closets and storage rooms. Lunch will be provided for all workers.
Anyone interested in any or all of these possible events, please fill out the response card.
