Membership

p. Anyone wishing to apply for membership may do so by registering with the secretary and demonstrating a commitment to the mission. Members participate in the charitable activities of the organization and are obligated to do some committee work or other helpful related work.  The annual dues for members are those currently approved by the membership. 

p. Program Services of the organization will not be denied to any person on the basis of race, color, religion or national origin. No one shall be denied participation or any other privileges of the organization due to their inability to make a financial contribution. All activities are open to the public.


h2. Program Services

p. The Society of Danube Swabians is proud of its achievements over the past 5 decades in serving the greater community of Chicago. Through its scheduled program services, the Society has contributed and helped all age groups lead a productive life. The details of each service are found under each activity and are the result of many individuals contributing their time and effort with out compensation.

p. For more information, contact the Society at (847) 296-6172. The events, library and museum are open to the public. Check the respective events for time and location.

p. The museum in the cultural center has authentic household items, tools and furniture on display. There is also a collection of dolls dressed in the traditions costumes of the different regions in which the Danube Swabians lived.  The library is open to the public during fund raising events and program service hours.

p. A collection of books describing the history of the towns in which the Danube Swabians settled in the Ponnonian Basin and lived for 200 years. There is also research material of the immigration of the settlers from Germany, Alsace-Lorraine, and Austria in the late 17th and early 18th centuries.  

p. The library is open to the public, but due to the nature of the reference materials and appointment must be made.

p. Classes are held Saturday mornings during the regular school year at the center. One does not need to be member to register.

h2. Children's Services

p. Our children's folk dance group is for children 3 to 13 years of age who are interested in folkdance, songs and German culture.  The group meets twice a month on Friday evenings from 7 to 8:30 pm.  The group performs at fundraising events and also at various community events in the area.  We also offer fun social events for the entire family, such as bowling, swimming and roller skating parties.  

p. The children are also involved in community service, by visiting area nursing homes and supporting the Des Plaines Self Help Closet and Food Pantry.  An annual toy collection is organized for the needs of the community.

h2. Youth Services

p. The youth group program has existed since 1953 and has provided high school age young people stability and socializing opportunities. Thousands of young people have been kept on the right track of life with their commitment to participate and serve in the community and Society events. They have learned to get along by being host and guest in ongoing youth exchange programs at the national and international level.

p. This group has proven themselves to be the heart and soul and driving force in all charitable events.  They support the events with cooking at fund raisers and senior program services.

p. Retired persons have a chance to enjoy a delicious meal and see films or play cards. This group meets every Wednesday of the month at the center and is open to the public.

h3. From North

p.  Take I-294 / Tristate Tollway South.  Exit Golf Road (Toll $0.50) Westbound.  Take Golf Road West through traffic circle at Golf and Wolf Road.  Stay left and make left turn onto Wolf Road (South).  Turn left on Harvey and proceed to Seegers Road.  Turn  Right on Seegers and proceed about one block to the hall, located on the right side.

h3. From Chicago

p. Take I-90 (Kennedy) to I-294 (Tri-state Tollway) North.  Exit I-294 at Dempster Street  Westbound to Rand Road (Rt. 12).  Take Rand Road Northwest to Golf.  Take Golf Road  West through traffic circle at Golf and Wolf Road.  Stay left and make left turn onto  Wolf Road (South).  Turn left on Harvey and proceed to Seegers Rd.  Turn Right on  Seegers and proceed about one block to the hall, located on the right side.

h3. From West

p. Take the I-90 / Northwest Tollway East toward Chicago. Exit Arlington Heights Road North.  Take Arlington Heights Road North to Golf Road.  Take Golf Road East to Wolf. Take Wolf-Golf Road North to Seegers.  (Wolf and Golf run together at this point into a traffic circle.  If you reach the traffic circle you have gone too far.)  Turn right on  Seegers and proceed to the Hall, located on the right side of the street.
