$5,000 Donation from Society to Food Pantry & Self Help Closet

A $5,000 monetary donation, plus hundreds of food and personal care items, were given to the Self Help Closet & Pantry of Des Plaines by the Society.

At their annual combined Christmas party on December 13, the young people of the Society welcomed Debra Walusiak, Executive Director of the Self Help Closet & Pantry. It was the ninth year that our children and youth folk dance groups participated.

President Eckhard Blaumueller presented Walusiak with a check in the amount of $5,000. In addition to the monetary donation given to the Food Pantry, almost 800 non-perishable food and personal care items were collected at the Christmas party, along with $1,135 worth of gift cards, and 51 children’s books. The gift cards and books were selected by the young people themselves to give to children their own age, who may not otherwise receive a gift this holiday season.

The Society’s Board of Directors is proud of its youth, because they have once again shared their good fortune with families in their community who show a demonstrable need.

Although the Christmas season brings in the greatest quantities of food items, the Society collects non-perishable food items and personal care products all year long for the Self Help Closet & Pantry of Des Plaines. Large red bins are set out in the building’s entryway and we encourage our members to bring donations at any time. The donations are transported to the Food Pantry on a regular basis by volunteers.
